Employer Clearance Before the Visa

For many non-EU workers, entry for subordinate or seasonal employment takes place within the annual quota framework known as Decreto Flussi. The employer in Italy generally applies first for a work clearance called the Nulla Osta. After it is issued, the worker can apply for the appropriate Italian work visa at the competent diplomatic mission.

Employer StartsThe Italian employer applies for the Nulla Osta at the competent immigration office.
Quota FrameworkMany employment routes operate within Decreto Flussi entry quotas, with specific exceptions outside the quotas.
Visa After ClearanceThe worker applies for the work visa after the required employer-side clearance has been issued.
A job offer alone does not guarantee a visa. The Nulla Osta, quota eligibility, employer confirmation and consular requirements must all be satisfied.

Typical Process

  • Employer confirms an eligible employment route
  • Employer applies for Nulla Osta
  • Clearance is issued if requirements are met
  • Worker submits the work visa application
  • Post-arrival residence formalities are completed in Italy

Typical Documents

  • Valid passport
  • Nulla Osta issued by the competent Italian office
  • Visa application and photo
  • Employment/supporting experience documents where requested
  • Insurance or other consular documents where required
  • Additional documents requested by the competent mission
